Good morning everyone, from beautiful Taormina, Sicily!
Yesterday began with a tour of the Acropolis; we began with touring the ruins of various foundries, sanctuaries and temples, leading up to the Parthenon. The Parthenon is slowly being restored with fresh marble from the quarries outside of Athens.
After that, it was a metro ride to the airport. We had a brief layover in Rome, then flew to Sicily, arriving late last night.
We are staying at a beautiful 4 star hotel; Hotel Villa Belvedere. Everyone had a great night of sleep, and enjoyed an incredible breakfast buffet this morning with fresh fruits, pastries, prossciuto, cheese and various juices (pear juice exists, and it's delicious!) Some even indulged in a nice mimosa to start the day (and it was free!)
We woke to a thunderstorm this morning with hail; within an hour the clouds dissipated and now it's a gloriously sunny day.
As we arrived late, today is a free day to explore the area. April asked everyone to think about why Sicily was the first Athenian colony; what makes this area special and desirable (the views are incredible!)
We'll share a follow up post with pictures from the Acropolis. 😊
